The Beauty of Books: Book designer, Artist, published Author, web designer for small businesses at Robin's Webs |
Robin Brooks, book designerRobin Brooks, book designer and principal of The Beauty of Books, has been a graphic designer for 40 years, designing books over all of this time, including ones for Viking Penguin and for the Waldorf Schools of North America. In the last ten or so years, she has focused entirely on designing books.
Robin loves the quiet intimacy and sculptural quality of book design. Consisting primarily of typography, much of book design concerns the relationship of type to type, its size and spacing, the balance of white space, and the boldness or quiet of a page. Type can either stand alone or be interlaced with photography or art. “I’m fascinated by the process of the human life and how it can be explored and memorialized on the page. I stand in awe of each individual experience and of how we perceive and then 'speak' who we are and what we do on this planet, whether in words or visual images. When we make note of our days and years, we create for others a priceless record. “I am an author and artist as well as a book designer. All that I do and have done allow me the tools that help to shape the pages of a book. It is my honor to be a part of the process of transformation from written voice to finished book.” — Robin Brooks, book designer and owner, The Beauty of Books |
